Charles served as a Machinist's Mate, Second Class, S.S. Henry R. Mallory (ID-1280), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

Charles was declared "Missing In Action" when the Mallory was was hit by one torpedo fired from German submarine U-402 around 600 nautical miles (1,100 km) south-southwest of Iceland and sank during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
