Robert married Miss Helen Laughlin in August 1941 of Fredonia and the young couple became the proud parents of a son, James who was born on February 20, 1942.
With World War II in progress since 1941 for America, PVT Murray entered the U.S. Army in June 1944, and was sent overseas to join the 18TH Infantry Regiment, 1st Division in November the same year. The Division raced through the Ardennes, and fought continuously from 17 December 1944 to 28 January 1945.
On Monday, February 5, 1945, his wife Helen who had been residing with their son James since PVT Murray's deployment overseas; with her parents in Fredonia received a telegram from the War Department that her husband was killed in action in Belgium on January 18, 1945.
Surviving Private Murray are his wife and son, his parents, his brothers, Thomas F. Murray Jr., and Howard Steinkirchner of Dunkirk, and PVT John Murray of Bowman Field, Kentucky, and his sister, Mrs. John Humphrey, who is residing with her parents while her husband is serving overseas.
PVT. Robert James Murray is interred in Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial.
