Vivian was the daughter of Peter Kimball Lemmon, Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth Buchanan.

Vivian's parents were Mormon polygamists who moved to Mexico about 1890 to avoid her father's arrest for polygamy in the States and so he could continue practicing polygamy in Mexico.

Vivian was only about seven years old when her family moved to Mexico. The family was there until 1912, when the Mexican revolutionaries expelled many foreigners. Vivian grew up in Mexico, and married her first husband, Abia Ezekiel Johnson, there. Abia already had one wife and several children; he, thus, became a polygamist when he married Vivian.

Vivian's first three children were born in Mexico. The last four were born in Utah, after the family left Mexico.

When Abia and his two wives left Mexico, both families located in Salt Lake City.
