Captain Edgar George Probstfeld, born 5 Aug 1913 in Wisconsin, was the son of Paul John and Christina Antonia (Van Hatten) Probstfeld of Verona, Lawrence County, in far southwestern Missouri. Verona is 30 miles southwest of Springfield.

In the 1920 census, 6 year-old Edgar is living with his parents and four siblings (2 older and 2 younger) in rural Pleasant Ridge, Barry County, Missouri. Pleasant Ridge is 5 miles due south of Verona. His father is farming. By the 1930 census 16 year-old Edgar is still living with his parents near Pleasant Ridge but with 9 siblings (2 older and 7 younger). His father passed away in 1936.

Edgar enlisted 19 Mar 1941 in Portland, Oregon. He had been living in Hood River, Oregon. He was assigned to the 13th Armored Regiment of the 1st Armored “Old Ironsides” Division.

On the day that Capt. Probstfeld was killed in action the 1st Armored had jumped off from Beja on their drive toward Mateur, Tunisia.

From Tunisia campaign, Wikipedia: “Forward units of the 1st Armored Division came into the Beja sector on 22 April in their drive eastward to Tunis (Beja is 74 miles due west of Tunis). On the morning of 22 April, the 46th Division attacked on the IX Corps front, creating a gap for the 6th Armored Division to pass through by nightfall, followed by 1st Armored Division, striking east for the next two days but not quick enough to forestall the creation of a strong anti-tank screen which halted their progress. The battle had drawn the Axis reserves of armor south, away from the central front.”
A Cenotaph marker in memory of Captain Probstfeld lies at the foot of his parents headstone in Calvary Cemetery in Sacred Heart Parish, Verona, Missouri.
