Maxwell was the son of Oliver and Maude Jane Cox, of Tingha, New South Wales, Australia, and husband of Betty Cox, of Macleod, Victoria. He had a young daughter, Verelle at the time of the incident. He was a Flying Officer, in the Royal Australian Air Force. Service Number: 424379. He was Killed, aged 27 yrs, in a flying accident at Trefor, on the Llyn Peninsula, North Wales while flying in Halifax Bomber JD 417. The aircraft left RAF Lindholm on a navigation training exercise and entered bad weather and thick fog where it crashed into Yr Eifl near Trefor (Welsh spelling) or Trevor (English spelling) on the north side of the Lleyn Peninsula, 12 miles south west of Caernarfon, North Wales.
