428 Squadron's Avro Lancaster BX (#KB766) bomber aircraft, with an aircrew of seven, took off at night from RAF Middleton St. George for an air operation over Hagen in Germany. While KB766 was flying towards France, severe icing created problems for the pilot to control the aircraft and he was forced to reduce altitude. The pilot ordered his crew to exit the Lancaster by parachute before he proceeded to manage a landing in France. Sadly, two airmen lost their lives when they bailed out of the aircraft in the vicinity of le Havre.

RAFVR Sergeant Maurice HEMPSEED and
RCAF Flying Officer Mortimer Samuel SUCHAROV.
