William served as a Second Lieutenant & Navigator on B-24D "Mammy Yokum" #42-40221, 424th Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided at 964 Jefferson Avenue, Rochester, Monroe County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on Janauary 19, 1942 in Rochester, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

B-24D "Mammy Yokum" #42-40221 was on a ferrying trip from Bomber 2 Airfield to Guadalcanal with a crew of 5 and 10 passengers.

William was declared "Missing In Action" in the "Line Of Duty" when the B-24 he was on, after taking off from Bomber 2 Airfield, New Hebrides, developed engine trouble and had to ditch in the bay close to the Airfield during the war.

A total of 6 perished during this flight and 9 survived.
