He was the father to Ilona Cowart who was born after his death. He was mentioned in the book " Tarawa, The Story of a Battle" by Robert Sherrod. Mr. Sherrod later visited Bunk's wife and did a follow up in " Postscript To Tarawa for the Marine Corps publication, The Leatherneck, which appeared in Oct 1948 edition.
A memorial Plot I place at Mount Moriah in Pickens County, Alabama. Bunks body is buried at Tarawan Island.
