William Franklin "Bunk" Cowart was born in Pickens County , Alabama to Lester Vonner and Mary Alice Robinson Cowart. He was the brother to Edward Lavene, Lester Vonner Jr, Mary Laudice, Raymond Owen, Lillie Loften, Rosa Delina, Freddie Earl, Betty Jo, and infant girl, James Thomas and Peggy Sue.
Bunk work at a radio Station in Columbus, Lowndes Cty Ms before joining the service. He met and married Lesley Alison Biggs in Wellington, New Zealand during the war. He was the father to Ilona Cowart who was born after his death. He was mentioned in the book " Tarawa, The Story of a Battle" by Robert Sherrod. Mr. Sherrod later visited Bunk's wife and did a follow up in " Postscript To Tarawa for the Marine Corps publication, The Leatherneck, which appeared in Oct 1948 edition.
A memorial Plot I place at Mount Moriah in Pickens County, Alabama. Bunks body is buried at Tarawan Island.
