Radioman Third Class Cohn was a rear gunner for a US Navy dive bomber, SBD-2. He was assigned to Scouting 6 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.
On December 7, 1941, RM 3/c Cohn & his pilot, Ensign M McCarthy, were part of a flight ordered to fly ahead of the Enterprise to Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately this flight encountered a large Japanese flight that was enroute to attack Pearl Harbor. During the ensuing fighting over pearl Harbor, their aircraft was shot down by several Japanese Zeros. McCarthy was able to bailout, but for unknown reasons Cohn did not. Cohn was one of the first casualties of Pearl Harbor.
