Jonathan Alder was the first white settler in Madison County (Ohio). He was born on September 16, 1773 in Maryland. He was the son of Bartholomew and Hannah Alder. Jonathan was abducted by Indians in 1781 and lived among the Indians for most of his childhood. He traveled with the Indians and settled in Madison County. He chose to live as a white man. Jonathan was finally reunited with his mother in 1805. He fought in the War of 1812. He died in Madison County on January 30, 1849. Jonathan Alder Local Schools are named in honor of Jonathan Alder.

His tombstone reads:

First white settler in Madison County.
Taken by Indians in 1781.
Returned to his mother in 1805.
Fought in the War of 1812.
