Son of John and Jane Mann of Elm Grove. Attended West Hartlepool Grammar. Keen rugby player playing for the First XV, Durham County Schoolboys, and West Hartlepool. Articled as a clerk to Norman Hope solicitors moving to Leicester to take over the management of their Leicester branch. He continued to play rugby with his new club Leicester Tigers and played at county level with Leicester County. A pilot with the RAF Volunteer Reserve, he was called to duty as an RAF pilot. He completed many missions before his death, rather late in the war, on 22 May 1944. His plane – Lancaster III bomber – took off from RAF Witchford in Cambridgeshire on a bombing run to Duisberg in Germany. Another bomber at a higher altitude was hit by flak. It collided with Albert's plane as it fell and both bombers crashed just north-west of Duisberg at Beckerwerth. He left behind a wife, Violet Elisa Mann, and their young son.
