106 Squadron.

Aged 21.

Son of Hugh Stanley Abel and Lily née Tuggett Abel, of 429 Kings Road, Stretford, Lancashire.


Sydney attended Stretford Grammar School and when he left in 1939, he joined the Customs And Excise service. He joined the RAFVR in March 1941 and volunteered for aircrew. He was sent, under the "Arnold Scheme", to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for his flying training and received his wings at the U.S.A. Army Air Corps Flying School at Maxwell Field, Alabama.


Sydney was the pilot of a Lancaster bomber which crashed whilst on a mission to attack the Krupps steelworks at Essen.

The crew of the Avro Lancaster Mark 1, ED 451, Code ZN-O, all of whom are buried in Reichswald Cemetery, were
