Son of William Dill (1690 -1760) b. Correy Ballynastocker, Fannet, Donegal Co., Ireland.

Lineage stems from three successive John Dills in Ireland and in the Battle of Dromchriadh, Galway, 1600. John Dill (b. 1725) married Mary Ann Edwards Barrett (b. 1728) in 1747. It is believed that John Dill was Mary Ann's second husband.

First appears in Kent County, Delaware records in 1748. 1 of 12 Siblings. Served as Patriot Paymaster in the Continental Army.

After the death of their father William, John Dill and his younger brother James (b. 1733), left Delaware and headed south to Orange County, North Carolina, which later become Caswell County in 1777. Their families remained there until after the Revolutionary War. Land records and tax documents (Year 1755/Dan River Valley) and other census records, will pinpoint their location in the old Pleasant Grove/Primitive Baptist Community. His brother James returned to Kent County, Delaware and married in 1775. By 1785, John Dill and several of his sons: Archibald, Richard, Runnells, John Jr. (all soldiers in the Revolutionary War), along with son Stephen, had moved their families to the Greenville County District, South Carolina. Archibald, the oldest son, eventually headed west to middle Tennessee while his parents John and Mary remained in South Carolina the rest of their lives. John Dill's Last Will & Testament was executed and witnessed by Reuben and David Barrett in Greenville, SC on March 7, 1807.

John Dill's unreadable gravestone may be one of the oldest {if not the oldest) stone in this cemetery. Because his wife Mary Ann is buried near this location, the smaller gravestone may be one of their children.
