Mrs. Esther Mattes, 81, a former Kiel resident and a resident of Willowdale Nursing Home in New Holstein for a year, died Friday evening at Calumet Memorial Hospital in Chilton, where she had been a patient for a week.
The former Esther Mueller was born March 23, 1901, in the Town of Schleswig, daughter of Rudolph Mueller and Mary Esling Mueller Lindemann. She attended district school. She married Lester Mattes on Sept. 3, 1940, in Kaukauna and they resided in Kiel following marriage. Mr. Mattes died in 1957. Mrs. Mattes was employed at Christel Department Store in Kiel for many years. She was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ and was a former Sunday school teacher there. She was also a member of GUG Germania Society, Kiel Senior Citizens, and a founder of the Kiel Girl Scout troop.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Suzanne Boyle of Williamsville, NY; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Wilma Kenneke of Kiel and Miss Dora Nanz of Cascade. Three brothers, a step-brother and four sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held Monday at St. Peter UCC in Kiel. The Rev. John Baumann, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Kiel Cemetery.
