James Monroe Holderbaum was listed as age 13 on the 1850 Noble, Wabash County, Indiana census with Adam Holderbaum, age 62, two brothers, and one sister. Ancestry.com family trees show him to be a son of Adam Holderbaum, b. ca. 1787 in Pennsylvania, and Anna Riggles Holderbaum.

James M. Holderbaum enlisted in Co. A., 75th Indiana Infantry Regiment on August 14, 1862 in Wabash County. He served in this unit until July 29, 1864, when he transferred to the 1st U.S. Engineers Corps, was promoted to a full Corporal, and served another year.

James married Rachel on August 17, 1865 in Wabash County. (Indiana marriage index) In 1870 they were listed in Waltz, Wabash, IN with Jessie, a daughter aged 2. By 1880 this family was in Russell County, Kansas and James was listed as a farmer. The 1885 Ellsworth County, Kansas State Census lists him as a carpenter, as do the 1895 & 1900 Franklin County census reports.

Family information lists the father of James as Adam, memorial #24221233, buried near his daughter, Rachel Holderbaum Dimmick. Adam, b. ca. 1787, had at least 2 wives and a number of children. He was the son of Michael, a German-born Captain in the American Revolution, #83714730.
