Darrell E. Barker, Galesburg Chapel
80, of Galesburg, died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at home.
He was born September 4, 1929 in Ottumwa, Iowa the son of Nathan S. and Wilma V. Carruthers Barker. He married Bonnie J. Glaspie on December 21, 1952 in Ottumwa. She preceded him in death on May 23, 1991.
He is survived by two sons, Billy B. Barker of Galesburg and Gary D. (and Debby) Barker of Abingdon, three daughters, Janice K. Barker of Ottumwa, Lei Loni J. Barker and Tina M. Glaspie, both of Elgin, Ill., six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and two sisters, Darlene Wilson and Dorothy (and Ray) O'Bryant, both of Galesburg. He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Poulton.
Darrell served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1955 during the Korean War. He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Jointers of America, Empire Lodge #269 AF&AM in Ottumwa, honorary member of Alpha Lodge #155, Illinois Council #1, Galesburg Chapter #46 Royal Arch Masons, where he was Secretary for 18 years, Galesburg Commandery #8, charter member of Illinois York Rite College #42, Valley of Moline Consistory, Bethel White Shrine and Galesburg Chapter #235 Order of Eastern Star. He served on the Rainbow Advisory Board and was a member of the Grand Cross of Color. He served on the Galesburg Masonic Temple Board and was vice president at the time it was disbanded in 1979 when the Masonic building on Prairie Street was sold. Darrell was also a member of the National Rifle Association and Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. He attended First Church of the Open Bible.
Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, August 6, 2010 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Masonic services will be conducted at 11 a.m. by Galesburg Masonic Lodge followed by a funeral service with Rev. Mark Dexter officiating. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Memorials may be made to Special Olympics. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
