2nd Lt. Richard E. Danca was an Illinois National Guardsman called to federal service as a member of B Company, 192nd Tank Battalion. He trained at Ft. Knox, Kentucky before taking part in maneuvers in Louisiana in the fall of 1941. Danca arrived in the Philippine Islands in Novembber 1941 and lived through the Japanese attack on Clark Airfield. He was involved in the first battles of World War II involving American tanks in the Philippine Islands. Danca became a Prisoner of War when Bataan was surrendered to the Japanese on April 9, 1942. he took part in the death march and was held as a POW at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan. He was put on a "hell ship" to Japan but died at Takao, Formosa. The U.S. Army records indicate he died of blood poisoning.
