Manning - Zion Lutheran Church was filled to overflowing Wednesday, Sept. 14, at funeral services for its pastor, the Rev. J. M. Ansorge, who died at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll early Monday morning, following a heart attack.
He had spent the previous week visiting his sons in Wilmar, Minn., and Spirit Lake, returning home Saturday morning. He suffered a heart attack Saturday noon.
Pastor Ad Schwidder of Fort Dodge gave the funeral address. Pastor Theodore Hosman of Adair was in charge of committal services. Pastor Paul Bergmann, Carroll, read the obituary, and Pastor G. B. Eschenbacher of Manning served as liturgist. Burial was in the Manning cemetery. Pallbearers were six elders of the church: Ed Knaack, Ross Graner, Vernon Ehlers, Donald Beck, Vertus Vollstedt and John Weible.
The Rev. Mr. Ansorge was born Feb. 2, 1882 at El Paso, Ill., son of Pastor and Mrs. B. J. Ansorge. The elder Ansorge was a pioneer Lutheran missionary in Iowa. When his son was of school age, the family moved to Fort Dodge. Rev. Mr. Ansorge began his schooling there and completed his elementary education in Horton Township near Ocheyedan.
His first year of high school was at Walther College, St. Louis, Mo., in 1896. He entered Concordia College at Fort Wayne, Ind., and completed preparatory training for the ministry in 1901. He graduated from Concordia Seminary at St. Louis, Mo., in June 1904, and was ordained and installed in the newly-organized congregation of Zion Lutheran Church in September, 1904.
Pastor Ansorge was married to Gertrude Heinke, daughter of Pastor and Mrs. F. W. Heinke, at Wiota, June 26, 1907. Four sons and one daughter were born to them. Three sons followed their father in the ministry: Arthur, who died in 1849; Karl of Willmar, Minn.; and Max of Spirit Lake. Another son, James, lives in Des Moines. Their daughter, Luella, lives in Omaha.
Rev. Ansorge was field secretary and vice-president of the Iowa District Walther League at various times; for nine years he served as a member of the board of the Home Finding Society of Fort Dodge. He was secretary of Missions for Iowa District West from 1942 to 1948.
He saw the Manning congregation grown from a few members to the fourth largest in Iowa District West, Missouri Synod. The congregation now has more than 800 communicant members and 1200 souls. He observed his 50th year in Manning last September.
The Rev. G. B. Eschenbacher came to Manning last October, but Rev. Ansorge still remained active in pastoral work.
Rev. and Mrs. Ansorge completed a new home in East Manning last fall. Shortly afterwards, Mrs. Ansorge died.
Rev. Ansorge is survived by his three sons, his daughter, eight grandchildren, a number of sisters and brothers.
