John Hilgeman, in conjunction with his father, Ernst, operated a brickyard north of New Bremen on what later became the Emil Kuenning farm near the "Lock Two" (German Protestant) Cemetery (along the canal). The Hilgemans sold the brickyard in February 1899 to Frank Wierth, whose wife was Emelie Jung, his wife's sister.
