George R. Betterton was the son of Owen and Nancy "Ann" Moon Betterton. Some genealogies indicate middle initial of L. but other documents use R. Birth and death dates are consistent with son of Owen and Ann and their son was a veteran of the Union Army.

George R. Betterton is shown on the roster of Company D, 7th Illinois Cavalry as enlisting from Chester as Private on September 7, 1861. His brother John enlisted the same day.

George married Rebecca Ann Morris on July 25, 1867 in Jasper, Adams County, Iowa. They had five children:

Charles Edward (1870-about 1879)
Elmer Lewis (1872-1956)
Laura Estella (1875-1959) married William H. Allen
Owen Betterton (1882-1955) married Ruth Vincent Fox
George McKinley (1886-1960) married Lota M. Johnson
