Death of a Distinguished Marylander
Mr. Charles Ridgely, of Hampton, near Towsontown, Maryland, died at the city of Rome, on the 28th or 29th of March, of typhoid fever, in the bloom of life, being in his forty-third year. He was an only son of John and Eliza Ridgely, whose remains now lie in the family vault upon Hampton, with those of his grandfather, General Charles Ridgely, who was Governor of Maryland in 1815. Mr. Ridgely had married Miss Margaret Howard, a granddaughter of General John Eager Howard, of revolutionary fame, who was also Governor of Maryland in 1788. He was thus connected with the first families of the State. Mr. Ridgely inherited from his father and mother a princely fortune, amounting to about five hundred thousand dollars, a portion of which comprises about five thousand acres of land, nearly all of it in that immediate locality.
