John R. Pogue, 65,former president of the defunct Farmers State bank of Decatur died at 10 am today in the Decatur and Macon county hospital. He had been ill one week with pneumonia. Mr. Pogue was a district supervisor of the Federal Housing administration and was actively engaged in this work until his last illness.
In early life Mr. Pogue was engaged in the retail drug business in Sullivan and was prominent in Republican politics of Moultrie county. He served one term as Republican member of the Illinois state senate. In 1913 he disposed of his drug business in Sullivan and came to Decatur to join in organization of the Farmers and Merchants State bank. In 1916 he was elected president of the bank which two years later was changed in name to the Farmers State Bank and Trust Co. Mr.Pogue remained with the bank as president until 1925 when it was closed following the death of Frank E. Harold,cashier.
Mr. Pogue was born in Shelby county near Prairie Home,Nov. 18, 1862. After attending school in his home community he attended he attended Illinois Wesleyan university, graduating in 1887. He was admitted to the practise of law but chose the drug business instead of that profession.
He was twice married. His first wife Ella M. Landon of Auburn whom he married in 1890 died in 1896. She was the mother of his two surviving sons,Harold A.Pogue of Decatur, district superintendent of WPA and Stanley L.Pogue former Decatur lawyer who now lives with his family in Springfield.
On Feb.4,1903 Mr.Pogue married Drucilla Hight of Farmer City who survives. Also surviving are three grandchildren, John, Roger and Barbara Pogue of Springfield and the following brothers and sisters, C. J.Pogue of Indianapolis, Ind, Mrs.Rosine Gregory,St.Petersburg, Fla, Mrs. O.A. Potter, LaClede,Mo, Mrs.W.G.Long,OakPark and U.G.Pogue, Wenatchee, Wash.
Mr.Pogue was a member of the Central Christian church of which he was an elder during the years he lived in Decatur. He was a member of the Masonic order.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 am in the Dawson & Wikoff chapel. Burial will be in Greenhill cemetery in Sullivan.
