Civil War: Company I, 7th California Infantry.

George Demetrius Kendall was the son of Uzziah Kendall (1793, ME - 1862, OH) and Abigail Wilson (1799, ME - 1864, OH). George was commissioned a captain at Sacramento, California, November 19, 1864, and mustered in as commander of Company I, 7th California Infantry, November 25. Captain Kendall was posted to Arizona Territory and stationed at Fort Whipple. He returned to California and was mustered out with his company at the Presidio of San Francisco March 31, 1866 (Orton, 790). After the war George returned to Arizona settling at Prescott where he served as Yavapai County Coroner in 1867. He had opened a drug store by 1870. He served as a member of the county board of supervisors from 1872-76 and as a probate judge in 1873. George was elected mayor of Prescott in 1876 and again in 1883. He successfully ran as Yavapai County representative to the territorial legislature in 1877. He married Ellen G. Williams (1847, MA-19??, CA) at Prescott July 24, 1877. They had three children: George, Abbie, and Myra Mae. He was a member of Aztlan Lodge, F. A. & M., and Barrett Post, Grand Army of the Republic (Hayden, Arizona Pioneer Biographies). George filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Prescott August 14, 1890, and received application No. 793,413 and certificate No. 654,514. His wife and children moved to California several years before his death. Ellen filed for a widow's pension in California November 28, 1902, and received application No. 773,972 and certificate No. 548,797 (Pension Application File, NARA).

Deceased was 75 years old and had resided in Prescott since the early sixties coming here with the California Column. During the early years of his residence in Prescott he was one of its most energetic and influential citizens, taking an active interest in everything pertaining to the advancement of the city. He was also active in the Masonic and Grand Army affairs and took a great interest in the Fire Department when it was first organized. He was a good citizen and highly respected by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and three children who have been residing in California for several years. He was a native of Cincinnati, where he owned some property.
