Moses, the son of Jeremiah and Louvina McGhee, married Mary A. Leathers on 10 October 1865. They were the parents of twelve children.
He became a member of the Little Springs Primitive Baptist church in December 1907. The funeral was held there with Reverend Harrison Knight officiating.
The survivors were his wife and nine children: Mrs. George Hall, John McGhee, Mrs. Douglas Akin, Mrs. Julia Moore, Joel McGhee, Thomas McGhee, Mrs. Larkin Waller, Mrs. John Smith and Mrs. Oscar Cardwell.
