James W. Steinberger, son of Joseph and Mary Petermeier Steinberger, was born October 14, 1913 in Baxter, Iowa and attended Baxter and Newton area schools. He was a lifelong resident of Jasper county and most recently lived at 705 N. 2nd Ave. W. in Newton.
He was married to Ella Mae Tinnermeier Sept. 1, 1934 in Alleman. Mr. Steinberger farmed in the Jasper County area, and was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge and St. John's Evangelical Church in rural Newton.
He died Tuesday morning, April 28, 1994, at the age of 80 at the Newton Health Care Center of complications of emphysema.
Survivors were his wife, Ella Mae; a son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Joy Lee; two daughters, Mary J. "Mitzie" (Mrs. Robert) Provin of Westminster, Calif., and Carolyn (Mrs. Robert) Ball of Sully; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving were his brother, Robert of Newton; and two sisters, Charlotte Johnson and Beulah Ghent, both of Baxter.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Dorothy Frahm, Verna Tupper, and Iva Steinberger.
Visitation was held at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after 3 p.m Saturday, June 30, and from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 1. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 2, 1994, at the funeral home. The Rev. Kenneth B. Lowe, pastor the Faith Baptist Church in Prairie City, conducted the services. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.
Memorials to a fund in his name were accepted.
