Shirl Dale Kemp, WWII Navy Submarine Veteran, died at his home on July 21, 2010 after battling cancer, the destroyer which ran silent and ran deep throughout numerous years of his life. He resided at 2931 North Timpview Drive (650 East) in Provo, Utah at the time of his death.

Born October 22, 1925, the youngest of five children, he is preceded in death by his parents, Richard Kemp and Clara Elvera Malmstrom, his siblings, Bernice Burgon (Marvin), Ruth Kemp, Dorothy Hubbard (Harris), and Kelvin (Burniss).

Survivors are his four sons Dale (Elaine), Blaine (Sheri), Bruce (Terri), and Kevin (Pamela). He also left a fleet of twenty-one grandchildren and soon to be thirty-seven great grandchildren.

Shirl attended school in Murray, where he played the trumpet from the fourth grade through High School Band and beyond. He graduated from Murray High School in 1943.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 at age seventeen. He attended the University of Chicago for Navy radio school, playing the mellophone in their band. Of the class of 350 Seaman, 150 applied to submarine school and he was one of only seven who were accepted. Shirl was a radioman 1st Class on the USS Sea Robin for two tours in the Pacific when the war ended.

After the war, Shirl met Barbara McMullin, on a blind date and they were married on October 29, 1947 and were later sealed in the Manti Temple along with their four sons. They were married sweethearts for sixty-two years when she passed away in January of this year.

He owned Shirl Kemp Opticians located on Freedom Blvd in Provo. He was known for serving his customers faithfully and fairly until his retirement. Additionally, he served on the Board of Far West Bank, UTA and as a Provo City neighborhood chair. He was president of the Provo Sertoma Club and the commander of the Utah Chapter of Submarine Veterans. He directed the construction of a beautiful memorial at Camp Williams honoring the USS Harder which was lost at sea. He served as bishop of the Edgemont 3rd Ward.

Shirl loved to garden and always over planted to share fruits and vegetables with his family and neighbors. His generosity is legend, matched equally by his work ethic. Serving others has long propelled him.

His faith in priesthood blessings has helped him surface from three prior attacks of cancer and one final time from the sorrowing deep of this mortality. He is a hero to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Each treasures their time with him, as he lifted them too.

It is fitting that a true patriot passes in July as we celebrate freedom and pioneer history. He is finally free from the ravages of lymphoma. Shirl is a war veteran in more ways than one. Some stand out in this eternal war to make men free. His life is a witness to the Plan of Salvation. He has become a "lily of beauty" in the Plan. He has lived to make his family free. We salute you and we love you, Dad. You are top side now!

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2010 in the Edgemont Twenty-First Ward Chapel, 2900 North Timpview Drive, Provo. Friends may call at the Church on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the services.
Interment: Provo City Cemetery.
