Daughter of--
Daniel Thompson Payne [1780-1858]
(son of Reuben Payne and Elizabeth Sweatman/Swetnam)
and
Martha Sarah Frazier Payne [1783-1849]
(daughter of Major James Elijhu Frazier and Abigail Davies/Davis Frazier)

-----
NOTE: The surname "Hayes" appears as "Hays" in many census and other documents, and on her grave marker.

-----

Marriage--
About 1830 in Kentucky (probably), married to
John Hayes (born about 1807 - death before 1870). John Hayes does not appear on any records after 1860 (found by this compiler), and it is presumed that he passed away before 1870 and is buried in Monroe County, Kentucky.

Children of this marriage (known to this compiler at current time):
(1) Jesse P Hayes (1831 Monroe County, KY-1922 Rosedale, OK)
(2) James A Hayes (1836 Monroe County, KY-1913 Monroe County, KY)

In Aug 1850, Monroe County, Kentucky, Mary was the head of household with her two sons living with her (Jesse and James). She was listed as owning property valued at $450 and farming with her sons.

In 1860, Mary was still living in Monroe County, Kentucky, with her husband John Hayes, and her two sons. John Hayes was most likely serving in the American Civil War about this time, and may have been a casualty of war or suffered from injuries. There are many John Hayes and "Unknown" Hayes listed in cemetery and military records that could use some closer research to locate his history.

In Jun 1880, Mary (age 72 and listed as widowed on the census) was living in Buchanan, Sullivan, Missouri, with her son Jesse P Hayes and his family on a farm. Mary's son James A Hayes was living in Monroe County, Kentucky, at this time.

Mary passed away at age 83 years 9 months, and is buried in the Payne Cemetery, in Sullivan County, Missouri. Many of Mary's family members have found their final rest in this small rural Payne Cemetery.
