Author, Screenwriter. He began his career writing for the Syracuse Herald newspaper in 1893 and was working there when his first novel "Arms and the woman" was published in 1899 and later adapted into an operetta named "Her Royal Highness." His second book, Puppet Crown, spent a year on the best-seller list in 1901. Many of his works were serialized in the Saturday Evening Post, Red Book, and the Ladies Home Journal. He also wrote an operetta "The Watteau Shepherdess" in 1906. He adapted his novels to the screen, including "The Mollycoddle " which starred Douglas Fairbanks. His mystery "The Drums of Jeopardy" was released in 1923 with Wallace Beery as the mad Russian scientist Boris Karlov. Actor William Henry Pratt liked the name and was thereafter known as Boris Karloff. Thirty of his forty titles were made into films; three of these works were performed on Broadway. A childhood experience rendered him deaf but he used that to be "action-minded," emphasizing the visual viewpoints in his plots.
