"Papa Joe" as he is affectionately called was born at the family home in Logan, Quay, New Mexico, before New Mexico statehood, to Quay County pioneers. He was a member of the first class in the public schools at Logan, which graduated in 1925, and in July 2000 he was honored as the only graduate to attend his 75th Logan High School reunion class. In 1934 he was the editor of the Logan Leader newspaper. He attended New Mexico A & M in Las Cruces, where he was a member of the band, and played the clarinet, saxophone and trumpet. He was a merchant for many years. He began working for his father in the family Lumber Yard and General Store in Logan, New Mexico. In 1942 he purchased the Logan store from his father and later opened stores in Tucumcari, New Mexico and Colorado Springs, Colorado. When his father became the Ford Motor and John Deere dealer in Logan, he was certified as a Model "T" and Model "A" mechanic by Ford Motor Company, after attending Ford's factory school in Denver, Colorado. He was also known to race his 12-Cylinder Haynes up and down main street. Later he became a licensed general contractor, electrician and plumber and built homes in the Logan and Colorado Springs areas. He and his wife Helen owned and ran Continental Vending Supply and filled toy and gumball machines all over the Southwest States and Rocky Mountains. He loved Baseball and grew up playing Baseball in Logan and Nara Visa, New Mexico.
