St. Matthews - Frances Vernell Baltzegar Smith, 84, of 253 Burke Road, St. Matthews, died Sunday, July 8, 2007, at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, in the West End Cemetery in St. Matthews, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas B. Huggins officiating. Mrs. Smith was born in the parents' home in Norway, a daughter of the late William Lucious Baltzegar and Addie Bell Hughes Baltzegar. She joined Willow Swamp Baptist Church in Norway. After she married, she attended First Baptist Church in St. Matthews. Mrs. Smith was the widow of Ellison "Ed" Durant Smith Sr. Survivors include a son, Ellison Durant Jr. of St. Matthews; daughter, Mrs. Fonsein M. Smith of St. Matthews; sister, Mrs. Willow B. Morgan of West Columbia; sister-in-law, Mrs. Bessie Davis of St. Matthews; a number of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 9, at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home of Orangeburg. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Columbia, SC 29201.
