Ellis was the Calhoun County Coroner for many years. He was a co-owner with his brother, Charles, of the West Point Ferry. Charles lived with Ellis' family for 32 years.
The first ferry located near Winfield, Missouri was powered by a horse that walked back and forth on the boat, pulling a rope through a pulley system. The horse was replaced by an engine in 1900.
The Inmans bought the Winfield Ferry in 1920. When the lock and dam at Alton was completed in the late 1930's, the dam made landing impossible because the river bank was filled with dirt. The Inmans dredged a harbor and continued operating the ferry until 1956.
At the time of his death, Ellis was 59 years, 5 months and 15 days old. He was survived by his wife, Era Faye; 2 sons, Merle and Charles Inman; 1 brother, Allen Inman of Jerseyville; and 4 sisters, Ruth Fiedler of Batchtown, Lotus Foval, Elizabeth Stroud and Margaret Earley, all of Maplewood, St. Louis County, Missouri.
Visitation was held on the evening of 12 Jul 1957 and until 9 a.m. the following morning at the C. C. Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on 13 Jul 1957 at the Methodist Church in Batchtown.
