WALTER HARMER
AGE: 90 BERKELEY TWP.
Walter Harmer, 90, of Berkeley Township, section of Silver Ridge Park West passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 17, 2010 in the arms of the love of his life, his devoted wife of 67 years, Lillian. Born in Bayonne, NJ on July 14, 1920 he was the son of the late Walter and Lillian Harmer.
Walter, or "Buddy" as he was known by all, is also predeceased by brother, Frank, and sisters, Lillian, and Dorothy; son, Walter Harmer III; son in law, Richard Gregg of Beachwood; great grandson, Robert Harmer III, and most recently, grandson, David Harmer of Toms River. Buddy is survived by his forever sweetheart and precious wife and best friend, Lillian; his two "favorite" daughters, Mae Howard and her husband Russ of Leonardo, NJ and Pauline Gregg of Toms River, NJ; his five adoring sons and their spouses, Dan and Jean Harmer of Va, Bob and Joy Harmer of Toms River, NJ, Tom and Robin Harmer of Va, Don and Ellen Harmer of Toms River, NJ and Ken and Chrissy Harmer of Hazlet, NJ; 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, and his sister, Delores Lowery of Edison, NJ.
Buddy loved his job as Locomotive Engineer for Jersey Central Lines; he worked there for 45 years, retiring in 1983. In his youth he was an avid body builder and Golden Gloves Boxer. He continued his interest in the world of exercise and nutrition throughout his life. He was a huge Mets fan and enjoyed watching football and baseball on his big screen TV. He was a "man's man", but could also be caught watching Saturday morning cartoons with his grandson. Buddy had an unmatched sense of humor and optimistic outlook on life, traits he considered most necessary to see one's self through the hardships of life. But Buddy's greatest passion and source of extreme pride was the family he leaves behind to miss him beyond measure, and to treasure all the moments and memories engraved in their hearts by this extraordinary husband, father and grandfather.
