Songwriter. He served in the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada regiment, and participated in the June 2, 1866 Battle of Ridgeway, helping to repulse an invasion from the Irish-American Fenians. While serving in the Army he wrote "The Maple Leaf Forever" a song that became popular in Canada, and for many years was Canada's unofficial national anthem.
