Son of Frank & Agnes (Ptacek) Slaby. Joe graduated from Brainard High School in 1936. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp. Joe married Ruth L. Lawson in 1941 prior to enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps. He was assigned to the 320th Troop Carrier Squadron of the 509th Composite Group as Supply Sergeant in charge of Transporting supplies & equipment to the Tinian Islands. 509th Group Commander Paul W. Tibbets flying a b-29 bomber named "Enola Gay" dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6th, 1945. A second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan on August 9th. After his discharge in December, 1945, Joe returned to Lincoln & was employed in auto sales; by Elgin Watch Company for 9 ½ years as Set-Up Supervisor. He then joined the US Postal Service in January, 1956, at Lincoln as a postal clerk & served as Scheme Examiner until retirement on December 19, 1981 after 25 years of service. Joe joined the Havelock American Legion Post #342 in 1975. He served as Post Adjutant for many years prior to being elected Post Commander. He was elected Lancaster County Commander & later elected Area "C" Vice Commander. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans having been elected Director of the DAV Thrift Stores. Other long time memberships included: Veteran's of Foreign Wars, Northeast United Church of Christ.
