Son of Samuel Hawley & Sophia Ripley.

Married Clarinda Taylor on March 24, 1848. They had 11 children according to 1900 census, 10 of whom were Mary Jane, William A, John H, Sarah E, Francis C, Jane, Wesley E, James Hulbert, Isaac S, & Ida May.

Corporal in 7th Ind Battery, OH Light Artillery

Occupation: journeyman carpenter & house joiner. Contracted to build new schoolhouse in Adams Mills dist., OH in 1882. He & his son William are on record as having built several houses in Meigs Co., OH.

Married Celestia Curtis on May 4, 1905.

His widow Celestia applied for his Civil War Pension on Oct. 4, 1907. John must have died shortly before that date.
