Many thanks to Dr. Howard Hickman for most of the following information.

In Oct. 1812 Sophia Ripple married Samuel Hawley in Washington Co., MD. Their children were William Milnor, Samuel R., James M., Nancy Jane, John W., David Kennedy, & Mary Ann.

Census records say Sophia was unable to write. She signed deeds with "her mark".

Sophia was buried in the family plot. An unidentified source writes, "In Long Bottom, there is a road called #9 road. That is where Samuel, Sophia, and I think a few children are buried. There used to be an old homestead across the road from Samuel's grave. That is where Sophia I was told is buried."

Note: "I searched the MD and VA censuses for Ripley but I did not find any that applied to this time and location. There were some Ripple entries in MD and VA. I found some indication that Ripple was from Germany. If Sophia is of German descent, the pronunciation of Ripple would be approximately "Ripley". Since Ripley is a common name and since Sophia signed deeds with her mark, i.e. could not spell, she probably would not have argued for Ripple. Since then I have been in contact with the library in Hagerstown. I am even more convinced that Ripple is correct."

Changed parentage on 11/16/2023 by MelB (48606792):
Sophia was d/o Jacob & Magdalena Ripley, who resided near Berkeley Springs when Sophia Ripple married Samuel Hawley in 1812. Berkeley Springs is in Morgan Co., WV, just across the Maryland state line. (In 1812, it was Berkeley Co., VA)

Sophia was not the d/o Calvin and Margaret (Bradford) Ripley. Their daughter Sophia, born in 1797, married Samuel Carr in 1825, died in 1892 in Providence, RI & buried there. FAG Memorial ID 87751805.
