SAMUEL J. BARNES

Samuel J. Barnes died on Monday, April 24, 1933, at his home in Mann Township, Bedford County, Pa. He was born on April 9, 1862, and was a son of John and Eliza Jay Barnes. He was a member of the Christian Church. He was united in marriage with Matilda Conrad who died April 13, 1922. The following children survive: Anna Elizabeth Barnes, Mrs. Aquilla Smith and Silas S. Barnes, all of Inglesmith, Pa. One sister, Mrs. Nancy Howsare, Rainsburg, and the following brothers also survive: Ambrose Barnes, Clearville, R. 1; David Barnes, Inglesmith; Dossie Barnes, Bakers Summit. Funeral services were held on Thursday morning at Fairview church with Rev. David Hollenshead officiating. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church. Mr. Barnes was a respected citizen in Mann Township, having served as tax collector for more than twenty years. In his community life he was always a good neighbor and friend, always firm and brave in his convictions of right and bold to stand against wrong. In his denomination and conference he has always been true and loyal to all the principles of the Christian Church, and for about thirty years has been a regular attendant at the annual sessions of the Conference. In his home church (Fairview) he was a deacon and leading member for many years--active in Sunday School, Christian Endeavor and prayer meeting. In his last attendances at church at different times, those present will remember his fervent prayers for the Lord's work and the Church in his community, for he was conscious that he was soon going away--and although he always looked forward to life's activities, yet in his last illness he was resigned and waiting for his Master's call.
