During February 1884, John moved his family to Hamilton County, Illinois.
He died at his home north of McLeansboro on 14 April 4 1897.
He was survived by his wife, four sons and one daughter.
The funeral was held at Blooming Grove church on 15 April 1897 with Reverend J. C. Elliott officiating. He was then laid to rest in the church cemetery.
