James Oswald's father was a Scottish mine engineer, his mother was Chilean. His parents met in Chile, then moved to San Jose, CA, where his father went to work in the New Almaden cinnabar mine. James was also employed at the mine and it was there he met his future wife, Aurelia Sambrano. Her family also mined at New Almaden. J.B. and Aurelia were married on Christmas Day, 1880. James B. Oswald was a Civil War veteran and his wife received a pension for his service after this death.
