Evelyn A. Sharpe, 96, of 8636 Sawmill Run Road in the town of Salamanca, died Sunday (Oct. 28, 2001) in her home following a long illness. She was born Jan. 2, 1905, in Franklinville, a daughter of the late George and Sadie Constantine Hubbard. She was a graduate of Fredonia Normal School and Cornell University. She began her teaching career in one-room schoolhouse in Red house. She taught math in Ellicottville for 10 years and in Little Valley for 25 years prior to her retirement. She was instrumental in civil rights action that enable women teachers to continue their teaching careers following marriage. She served as a representative for many years to the NEA state and national conventions. She was a member of the Congregational Church, Little Valley, a member and past matron of the Romona Chapter 344 of the Order of Easter Star and a long-time volunteer at the former Salamanca District Hospital. She joined VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) following her retirement from teaching in 1970. She served with VISTA for several years in Cattaraugus County, developing and supervising programs for senior citizens. She enjoyed bowling, fishing, bridge, traveling, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always willing to extend a helping hand to those in need. She was an outstanding women of remarkable courage and compassion. Surviving are four grandchildren: Ralph Riggs of Salamanca, Kristie Yunker of Fairbanks, Alaska, Mary Swanson of Sherman and Tamara Moffit of South Dayton; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Sara ‘‘Short'' Nuttal of Bay State, Red House, and Georgia Jaquay of Central Bridge, N.Y. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sue Ann Riggs in 1956; a son, John Joseph Sharpe in 1990; two brothers: Gerald ‘‘Dit'' Hubbard and Marvin Hubbard; two sisters: Berma Anderson and Wilma ‘‘Billie'' France.
