Robert John Schullery died peacefully, surrounded by love, on July 14, 2010 at Piedmont Crossing in Thomasville, NC. Robert was born April 30, 1916 in Danbury, CT, the son of Joseph Edward and Louise Wilhelmina Caroline (Wagner) Schullery. Robert served his country as a First Lieutenant, and as a Finance Officer in the U. S. Army Air Corps in India during WWII. He dedicated his life and career to government service. Having risen to the highest civil service level, he retired as Director, Finance Services, Federal Aviation Administration in Washington, D.C., following 32 years of Federal Government Service.
Robert was a devoted father, husband, and a dearly beloved grandfather and great-grandfather. His keen sense of rightness and great generosity to his family offered stabilizing and insightful support through life's many transitions. Robert was a man of outstanding integrity and lived his life with great discipline and compassion. He attended numerous courses and was always learning new things and eager to share them with his family. He was an avid golfer and world traveler who retired next to a golf course in Kitty Hawk, NC, where he lived many years. When he wasn't fishing, gardening, watching TV, or golfing, he was frequently found hunting for golf balls in the tall grass, always carrying a serpent stick with him.
He is survived and greatly missed by his wife of sixty-eight years, Martha Flint Schullery, daughter Louise Marie Cox (David Vania), son John Flint (Rosemary Royce)Schullery. He is also survived by grandson Olan (LiaMari) Cox and their children Malukai and Eva Cox of CA; granddaughter Heather Cox of MN; grandsons Kyle and Brett Schullery of NC. His grandson, Patrick Flint Schullery, sister, Dorothy Prinz, and twin brother, George Joseph preceded him in death.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Piedmont Crossing for their excellent professional and compassionate care. A private family service will be held at a later date in Amenia, NY. In lieu of flowers, his family feels that the best way to honor Robert's life is to contribute to a charity of your choice and/or do something nice for someone you love.
