Marcus Sprunger

Marcus Sprunger, 77, 412 Compromise Street, died unexpectedly in his home at 3 p.m. Saturday. A massive heart attack is blamed.

Mr. Sprunger had been well as usual and had done yard work part of the day. He was walking up the stairway inside his home when he collapsed and died. Emergency first aid by local doctors and EMS personnel failed to revive him.

A lifelong resident of this community, Mr. Sprunger was retired from Berne Furniture Company and had been doing some lawn and landscaping work in recent years. His most recent project was the planting of hundreds of red, white, blue and yellow tulips on the grounds of the Yager Funeral Home and they are memorial to Mr. Sprunger as they are now in full bloom.

He was a member of the First Mennonite Church, conducted a weekly Saturday night prayer service in his home and attended the weekly prayer breakfasts of the Berne CHM.

Mr. Sprunger was born in Monroe Township, Feb. 19, 1899, a son of Ulrich and Anna Liechty Sprunger. He was married to Barbara Amstutz Oct. ??, 1949.

The wife survives along with two daughters, Mrs. Adams (Marcella) Liechty, Berne and Mrs. Ernest (Eileen) Sprunger, R.R. 2, Berne; two step-sons, Glen Habegger, Eloy, Arizona and Merlin Habegger, Palestine, Illinois, a step-daughter, Mrs. Martel (Anna Jane) Fenning, ???, Kenya, East Africa, ?? grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren; a brother, ??? Sprunger, Berne and a sister, Mrs. Frieda Steiner, Berne.

His first wife, Clara Nichols, died in 1948. Also deceased are a daughter, Donna, a sister, Dora and three brothers, Walter, Eldon and Joel Sprunger.

The body is at the Yager Funeral Home where friends may call after 4 p.m. today. Services will be held in the chapel of the First Mennonite Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Rev. Kenneth Bauman officiating. Burial will be in the M.R.E. Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the African Inland Mission and Gideons International.
