Mary grew up in the Pleasantville, IA area and graduated Pleasantville High School in 1930.
She attend Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and taught in a country school east of Pleasantville for two years before becoming a full time homemaker. She married Samuel W. Kelso on February 24, 1933 at the Core home southwest of Pleasantville. They farmed in Marion & Story counties before moving to the Russell area where they lived until their retirement in 1974, then moving to Albia. Following her husband's death, Mary moved back to Pleasantville until 2007 when she entered the Manor Care in West Des Moines. Mary was the mother of six children: Herb, Gerald, Patricia, Rebecca, Wilson & Jimmy who passed away in infancy.
