Retired Army Air Corps Captain Delmar "Del" Decatur Stevens peacefully went to his Lord and Savior as he slept July 5, 2010, three weeks shy of his 90th birthday. He proudly served our country as a WWII B29 bomber pilot. He flew 35 combat missions in the Pacific theater and was highly decorated including the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a successful executive for MONY before retiring in 1978 and moving from Michigan to Florida. Del was an avid golfer, shooting his age several times in his seventies and eighties. He faithfully believed that Jesus died to forgive his sins. He attended Trinity United Methodist Church since moving to Gainesville 12 years ago. Del never missed a football or basketball game played by Blair or Reed. As a living historian, Del spoke about his WWII experiences to high school students and UF-ROTC. Del is survived by his wife of 68 years, Martha, and by daughters, Barbara Lazor (Dave) and Pamela Armagost (Greg), and sons, Stanley (Vickie) and Rodney. Grandchildren Scott Stevens, Suzanne Kao, Jennifer Jackson, Michael Lazor, Blair and Reed Armagost and four great grandchildren. Interment will be at the Florida National Cemetery at 10:30 on July 27th at Bushnell, FL. The family would like to thank the Gainesville VA hospital for their wonderful treatment, caring and compassion in his final months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests offerings to Trinity United Methodist Church in Gainesville.
