John Decater Stevens was born in 1888 to Everell D. and Magdalena Stevens. He was the third son and seventh child in the family. He grew up in Lenawee County, Michigan and spent the majority of his life in Lenawee County and northern Ohio.
He married Maida V. Koester on August 18, 1915 in Riga, Michigan. Rev. Frederick A. Perry performed the ceremony.
John and Maida had two sons: Rollin M. and Delmer D. Stevens; and three daughters: Olive M., Rachel E., and Beatrice A. Stevens.
Mr. Stevens was self-employed as a farmer and a carpenter. On Saturday, April 12, 1952 he had been doing carpentry work at a home in Blissfield when he began to feel ill. He was admitted to Bixby Hospital in Adrian after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. He died about 9:00 in the evening. He was 63 years old. He was survived by his wife and children and one brother, Lawrence, and three sisters, Ida Kellogg of Rome, Ohio, Nellie Laudenslager of Adrian, Michigan, and Florence Clark of Blissfield, Michigan.
