Robert Burdick was born November 2, 1630, in Devonshire, England, a child of Samuel Burdick. As an emigrant, Robert sailed from England to Newport, Rhode Island in 1651 where he was baptized as a member of the First Baptist Church of Newport, Rhode Island, November 16, 1652. Robert was living in Newport when he was admitted as a Freeman of Newport, May 22, 1655.

Robert Burdick was among the early settlers of the Western section of Rhode Island where he met and married Ruth Hubbard, November 2, 1655, at Westerly, Rhode Island. They had at least 11 children: Thomas; Naomi; Ruth; Deborah; Roger; Benjamin; Tacy; Daniel; Robert Jr.; Hubbard; and an unnamed infant.

Robert Burdick was admitted as a Freeman of the Colony of Rhode Island, May 20, 1657. Robert Burdick also represented his church in its struggle against the persecution of dissenters from the established church in Massachusetts, and in 1662, he and Tobias Saunders were arrested and sentenced to two years in a Boston jail, eventually being released in a prisoner exchange. In 1675, Robert and his family temporarily returned to Newport for safety during an Indian uprising, eventually returning to Westerly. Robert Burdick Sr., recorded as a member of the Newport Seventh Day Baptist Church in its 1692 record, died October 25, 1692, in Westerly where he is buried in the Burdick Ground, Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island.
