Obituary in The Times and Democrat, Orangeburg, SC, 29 Nov 2001: Lone Star - Jesse D. Shirer, 87, of 2972 McCords Ferry Road, Lone Star, died Wednesday Nov. 28, 2001, at his residence. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Pine Grove Lutheran Church in Lone Star, with Pastor Don Loadholt and Pastor Bob Young officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Shirer III, Mark Shirer, Scott Corcoran, Michael Smith, Derek Koucky, Michael Shirer Jr. and Kayne Shirer. Mr. Shirer was born in Lone Star, a son of the late William Perry Shirer and Susan Felder Shirer. He was a retired lumberman and farmer. He founded the Cameron Lumber Co., which he operated for more than 60 years until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of Pine Grove Lutheran Church and a former member of the board of First National Bank, The Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties. He was a former highway commissioner. He also served as a former magistrate and constable. Mr. Shirer was a Mason and a Shriner, and a charter member of the Lions Club. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Christine Zeagler Shirer of the home; his sons and daughters, J.D. Shirer Jr. and daughter-in-law Martha Emily Shirer of Lone Star, Margaret S. Mims and son-in-law Richard E. Mims of Columbia, Linda S. Koucky and son-in-law Jack Koucky of Gilbert, and Mike Shirer and daughter-in-law Kristi Shirer of Lone Star; nine grandchildren, David Shirer III, Donna S. Corcoran, Mark Shirer, Melissa Smith, Shannon Mims, Derek Koucky, Jessica Lane, Michael Shirer Jr. and Kayne Shirer; and four great-grandchildren.
