He belonged to the Leon Christian Church and was a member of the Masonic Order of Decatur, Iowa. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Eve Kirk and Lillian Bailey; and brother, Jim Akes. Survivors include widow, Laura, Leon; three sons; Dean and wife Lila, Leon; Harold and wife Virginia, Iowa City; and Wayne and wife Marion, Ottumwa; granddaughter, Cheryl Dunlap, Island Lake, Ill; grandson, Verne Akes, Sioux Falls, S.D; great grandson, David James Akes; two sisters: Beulah Hodges, Bedford, Iowa and Dale Kelley, Seattle, Wash; brother Fred Akes, Bedford.
