John was the son of Chretien Buchheit and Christine Stebler. His father was a fairly well-to-do farmer who was the highest paying taxpayer in the area. He immigrated to the United States in 1872 and settled in Louisville, Kentucky. On 08 Jan 1880 he married Elizabeth Von Bokern and they had eight children: Mary, John, Peter, Edward, Elizabeth, John, an unnamed infant girl, and Elizabeth C.. He was a carpenter by trade. John died of arteriosclerosis at the age of 75.
