George was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted as a Private on 21 Oct 1861 at the age of 23. He enlisted in Co C 4th Iowa Cavalry on 25 Nov 1861. He mustered out as 2nd Sergeant on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia. He was engaged in the Vicksburg campaign, in Wilson's raid, and in the campaign around Atlanta.
George resumed the vocation of farming after he returned home. He owned and farmed land in Nebraska and several counties in Iowa. He also raised hogs and cattle.
In 1867 he married Mary E Marshall, daughter of Josiah & Mary Marshall. They had 6 children: Esther, Catherine, Charles, Elmer, Mary, and Carrie.
